Avenues of Service

Club Service
Chairpersons:

This avenue of service is the foundation of Rotary.  Without the committee that heads up club organization and fellowship, a club cannot achieve goals in the other areas of service.  Club service encompasses membership development, meeting programs, meeting attendance, fellowship, club fundraisers and public relations.

Some of the events that fall under club service include: Club Website, Club directory, Club scrapbook, newspaper insert, fellowship parties, installation banquet, fireside chats, summer picnic, holiday parties, weekly Club bulletin and two major annual fundraisers:  the Casino Royale and the Golf Tournament.

Community Service
Chairperson: David Cammack

One of the key elements of an effective Rotary Club is to engage in local community service projects.  The cornerstone of Rotary is humanitarian service. It defines Rotary’s character, is the basis for its appeal and visibility in the community, and is the reason Rotary continues to grow.

Some of the events that fall under community service include: Rotary Independence Day Parade, County Fair Beer Garden, Sisson Library Book Sale, highway trash pickup, Rotary Park maintenance, Operation Winter Coat, Pagosa Outreach Connection, 9-Health Fair, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Centennial Project (community bus stop benches), St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, Loaves and Fishes, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, Dictionary Project, Back-to-School Supplies, Teacher Mini Grants, Rotary Youth Exchange, Special Olympics and Operation Helping Hand.

Vocational Service
Chairperson:

The Pagosa Springs Rotary Club Foundation Inc. (scholarships)
Directors:  Marion Francis, Dan Aupperle, Bud Brasher, and Jann Pitcher (immediate past Club President).

Scholarship selection committee:  Bud Brasher, Jessie Formwalt, Bob Eggleston, Sherry Waner, Buzz Gillentine, and Livia Cloman Lynch (chair).

No aspect of Rotary is more closely related to each member than a personal commitment to represent one’s vocation or occupation to fellow Rotarians and to exemplify the characteristics of high ethical standards and the dignity of work.  Vocational service is frequently demonstrated by offering young people career guidance, occupational information, and assistance in making vocational choices.

Each year Rotary gives scholarships to five deserving Pagosa Springs seniors.  The total award is $13,500 per year.  Since the beginning of the Pagosa Springs Rotary Club Foundation Inc., we have awarded $195,000 in scholarships.  Rotary also awards ten teacher mini-grants to deserving local teachers.  These grants are used to enhance educational opportunities within the classroom.  The Club sends one or two high school students annually to RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) each summer.

Youth Service
Chairperson: Jody McAlister

No matter how ardently Rotarians pursue their good works in the local and world communities, these efforts mean little unless young people are prepared to assume the mantle of leadership and service when their time comes.  Thus, the Pagosa Springs Rotary Club takes special interest in developing the talents and the enthusiasm of youth – instilling in them a sense of personal and civic responsibility.

Some of the youth projects the Pagosa Springs Rotary Club is involved in include:  a July read-a-thon for elementary school students, Kids Voting in November, third grade dictionary project, Special Olympics, book swap at the elementary school, Week of the Young Child, Harvest Festival (Halloween), post-prom party, youth exchange student program – both inbound and outbound, belt buckles for 4H project winners, cash prizes for Science Fair winners and school supplies for needy students.

International Service
Chairperson:

As an international organization, Rotary offers each member unique opportunities and responsibilities.  Although each Rotarian has first a responsibility to uphold the obligation of citizenship of his or her own country and community, membership in Rotary enables Rotarians to take a somewhat different view of international affairs.  A world-minded Rotarian looks beyond national patriotism and feels a responsibility for the advancement of international goodwill and peace.

Some of the international projects that have been undertaken by our Club include:  an orphanage in Honduras, pharmaceutical supplies to an orphanage in Russia, a science lab in a school in India, a shelter for the homeless in Juarez, Mexico, monetary aid to Tsunami victims, Friendship Bridge, wheelchair program, and school supplies to Vietnam.  Our Club hosts Group Study Exchange (GSE) teams from other countries every year.  Two Rotarians from our Club have served as leaders of Group Study Exchange Teams to New Zealand and India.  The Pagosa Club has also sponsored four non-Rotarians from our community to participate on GSE teams to other countries.  In 2004 – 2005 we had twelve new Paul Harris Fellows and $18,000 was contributed by our Club to the Rotary Foundation.
